There are abundant resources of greenhouse gases and other elements on Mars. The frozen poles contain solid carbon dioxide and solid water. Moreover, the planet is also rich in natural resources such as sulfur, fluorine and carbon. In order to foster a greenhouse effect, these gases must be released from the underground of the planet. The more carbon dioxide released, the higher the temperature, and the more other gazes are released. This chain reaction is called a positive feedback, and is made possible by the interdependence of temperature and pressure on Mars: the higher the temperature, the thicker the atmosphere, the thicker the atmosphere, the more it retains heat.

In order to warm up the atmosphere, mining operations will allow the release of gases trapped in the planet's regoliths. Thanks to a large number of machines and other industrial means it will be possible to optimize the extraction and therefore release greenhouse gases (including those forbidden for use on Earth because of their strong greenhouse effect). We actually need a part per million (ppm) to trigger this warming up of the planet, thus we will need approximately 1 billion tons of gas to reach our objective. Knowing that the span of life of the carbon dioxide is 500 years, 5 tons of this gas will have to be released each day in the Mars atmosphere (a few thousands of tons per year then) if we want to maintain the greenhouse effect. These quantities can easily be obtained industrially. To accelerate the process though, some gases, currently forbidden on Earth will be used at the beginning because they are much more efficient and reactive than the carbon dioxide. In the table below can found the relation between gases, energy, and the amount of additional degrees of temperature gained:
With this use of the planet's resources, Mars would transform itself, from a hostile and cold environment to a warmer and more humid viable place. When this target is reached, the human beings will be able to stay on the planet without a heated pressure suit but they will still need an oxygen mask; the Martian air will not be yet breathable.
Besides the “greenhouse effect factories”, we will also need factories to inject massive quantities of oxygen in the atmosphere. The goal is to stimulate an artificial photosynthesis so that after a while the Martian air becomes breathable. Unfortunately this process might be a very long one (thousands of years), but critical since the human body needs oxygen (O2). Thus we will use some other techniques to accelerate the process.

The above table shows the effectiveness of the different chlorofluorocarbons (darker zones indicates the best protection). These gases will then protect the beings against the Ultraviolet radiation (UV) and allow a primitive life on Mars, which will itself help creating an ozone layer and will entail a better and more natural protection against the UVs.
Les miroirs solaires the Solar mirrors
Le but ?
Apart from the industrial mining of the planet, the use of the energy of the sun to warm up the Martian poles can be a good strategy. A giant orbital mirror spread out in the neighborhood of the poles could intensify sunlight and then reflect it back onto Mars, significantly warming up the poles of the planet. The goal is to make the icy poles melt and thus liberate the solid-state carbon dioxide. This would also help increase the density and by consequence facilitate a sustainable atmosphere on Mars. The amount of resources of carbon dioxide at the poles are estimated to be sufficient to get a atmospheric pressure of 50 to 100 mbars, excluding the fact that it will also release some H2O. Of course these large stretch of ice also comprise water and by melting they will generate new oceans, the first ones for quite a while on this planet !
This mirror, though, would have to be gigantic, around 100 km of diameter and it would weigh probably 200 000 tons. We called it previously an orbital mirror but it would not exactly orbit mars, it would stay at a stationary location 214 000 kms above Mars. Such a mirror could warm up a pole up to 50 C, which would be sufficient to create the positive feedback explained in the introduction. Even if complicated technically, it is feasible to create such a mirror. This hypothesis is thus not to be disgarded.

Des asteroïdes? Asteroids?
The list wouldn't be complete without a destructive process. An extreme method would consist in bringing massive amounts of gas, such as ammonia, on Mars: first by detecting an asteroid that is mainly comprised of this gas, and then by driving it to collide with Mars. Such a crash would discharge huge quantities of greenhouse gases and would also help the release of the ones trapped in the local regolith. If efficient, this method would entail some collateral damages such as the destruction of a part of the landscape and would require a great deal of energy. However, we might also have to use these controlled asteroid impacts not for the release of the carbon dioxide but in order to bring some resources that Mars does not possess in sufficient quantities. This could be the case in order to reach the high target of nitrogen rate in the atmosphere. In this case just a few asteroids, present in the belt of the planet would be necessary, especially if we manage to have them crash on the layers of nitrate. Billions of tons of greenhouse gas, nitrogen and oxygen would then be discharged. 25 to 50 years would be necessary in order to find the adequate asteroids and bring them to Mars. With the help of the gravitational pull of the surrounding planets the rocket needed to drive the asteroids would only have to use a speed of 0.5 km/s. Only 4 or 5 asteroids would have to crash on Mars to generate a global warming that would induce the melting of the poles and probably the same amount of crashes would be needed in order to foster an sustainable ozone layer.

Conclusion
There are several methods that can lead to a global warming of Mars. Even if the current technologies do not allow us to use all of these methods, this project is a long shot and it would have to take into account the new information gathered recently. The creation of an atmosphere on Mars would need a couple of hundreds of years and would then induce a global warming. A first goal would be then reached, allowing human beings to get rid of their pressure suits and to simply use oxygen masks, the time for them to succeed in the second step of the process and create a breathable air.
